"I am ridiculously lucky," Hernandez told mikemcguff.com. "Not only am i joining an amazing news team, I'm moving to an amazing city! Houston's got it all: tremendous growth, an amazing arts scene, incredible restaurants that will have me wishing for elastic-waist pants in NO time, and major league sports. You better believe I'm already praying for Arian's hamstring."
I like her already! Since we will be inviting Lisa Hernandez into our living rooms every night (or so KHOU really hopes), we need to get to know more about her.
Hernandez was the weekend morning co-anchor and a general assignment reporter for ABC7 Eyewitness News (yep, it is KTRK 13's Disney sister station). She is a native Californian - born and raised in Indio which is just east of Palm Springs. According to her KABC bio, she made the move to LA as a freshman at UCLA.
What's rare in her past for an anchor is that Hernandez started freelancing for the LA Times while earning a political science degree. Yep, she started in the newspaper world. When she graduated in 2001, she refocused her career on TV news.
KESQ in Palm Springs is where Hernandez started as a producer. Then she went across the country to Charlotte, North Carolina's News 14 as a reporter. She then went back to California and joined KABC in 2004.
Much like a former anchor named Lisa at KHOU, this new Lisa is an avid runner according to her bio.
So what happens to Shern-Min Chow who has servied as a fill-in anchor after Noland took off for the west coast? Sources tell me she will be sitting next to Len Cannon as a new anchor on KHOU 11 News at 4. And for all of her fans, Chita Johnson is there too by the way - sometimes with Houston Texans cheerleaders for you NFL fans.
According to Hernandez's Facebook account, she starts this October.
Sources inside KABC speak very highly of her.

ReplyDeleteI usually don't write comments on this site but I will now, I come to this site very often. I Live in LA and I got to meet Lisa Hernandez this year at a women's conference in Los Angeles. what KABC sources say is true. she is down to earth. KHOU did a good job with this new hiring! Our (L.A.) loss is Houston's gain and good to see her moving up to a top anchor desk in Houston especially in a station like KHOU. it will be interesting to see her chemistry between Greg Hurst during the 5 and 10pm newscasts and Len Cannon during the 4pm newscast. but I think she will fit right in!
ReplyDeleteAnd that reason is Cheetah!
ReplyDeleteChita Johnson, Katherine Whaley, and now Lisa Hernandez! Dang, KHOU is surely trying to beat KPRC in hot attractive anchorwomen, with their big 3 (Dominique Sachse, Jennifer Reyna, and Nefertiti Jaquez). I can see this as a subtle competition to attract young male viewers perhaps ages 16-29 to their newscasts, of which I don't mind.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Dominique Sachse has competition.
ReplyDeleteBad Move for Lisa!!!! Better a weekend spot in the no. 2 market than no.1 in Houston... Fire your agent Lisa!
ReplyDeleteShe has nothing on Lucy. Boy do we miss her at 10pm.
ReplyDeleteHow could this be a bad move? She went from weekend MORNING anchor to main anchor. She wasn't even the evening weekend anchor. Tells you all you need to know about how good she is.
ReplyDeleteIt's clear KHOU got her only because of her last name.
What about Christina Haas? She is by far the best anchor there. What a shame.
ReplyDeleteUh... no. I've watched Lisa in LA and she's easy on the eyes but also smart. Very smart. I like the hire a lot. So before you criticize her, know her first.
ReplyDeleteI also Watched Lisa In LA and what jim says is right! she is more than just a pretty face!! I know she will fit right in houston! also does KHOU stream their newscast online?
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to hire Marcy Izzard.
ReplyDeleteTo suggest Sachse, Reyna and Jacquez are the hottest at KPRC tells me you're blind, related to one of them, or you are one of them. One looks like a grandma chipmunk, one has the Pear Shape going, and the other is quite masculine looking. Ch 2 is minor leagues. Accept it.
ReplyDeleteChristine Haas is a HORRIBLE anchorwoman. Lisa Hernandez needs to replace her!
ReplyDeleteFor anon @ 8:12PM: I am not blind, I am not related to one of them (I think that would be weird if that was the case), and obviously not one of them. Quit being jealous and stop hating, just like that LMFAO song this past summer "Don't be mad though, stop, hating is bad".
ReplyDeleteUmmm, we are just as dumbfounded why Mickey Mouse-owned, KABC dumped Lisa?. It certainly wasn't a salary thing. There were no known slots on the weekday shifts (morning, mid-day, afternoon or evening), so, it couldn't be that Lisa left becuase she was "passed up" for something that was not available.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, who knows why KABC station management dumped her, or non-renewed her contract. Could it be that on-air she comes across as well liked and pleasant, but off-air and off camera and behind the scenes, she may be hard to work with? Some anchors have been known to have two-sided personalitles. I'm not saying that's Lisa, it's just a question.
I'm sure local station management scoped this out, even if Mickey Mouse has tape on his lips and can't comment becuase of Disney's no talking about former employees policy. Mickey Mouse can only verify name, position, dates of employment, and in some cases salary. Belo certainly can dig into her work habits while she was at KABC.
On the weekends when we did have L.A.'s version of "breaking news" (heavy rains/floods fires, etc.), she was very competent at the desk. Actually, her weekend anchor partner, Joh Gregory is such a bore and too stiff, we've changed to KTLA Channel 5's new weekday morning news...not as stiff as John Gregory.
Ironically, KTLA is owned by Tribune, who owns the L.A. Times where Lisa got her start, but unfortunately for Houston, Tribune also owns KIAH, you know, the home of "NewsFix" and "Eye Opener". At least, KTLA will not be seeing any of those wacky ideas as KTLA is usually number one in L.A. during the mornings.
I do find it obnoxious that in every market you go to, it seems every anchor/reporter/talent always "glows" in their bio how much we "love" this city, or how great this city is over another, and that they just "love" xxxx city they are in this week/month/year. Too bad Lisa couldn't have been more original in her reply.
And why was it that Houston sent us Lucy Noland? So far, she's been pretty bland on Comcast-owned KNBC, nothing too great..so far. At least, she is more competent than the weekend evening anchor KNBC hired, who has since been banished to weekend mornings, Andy Adler...she is the biggest bunch of rocks on air in LaLa land.
Keep in mind, news in L.A. for the most part now is made up of celebrities, wiildfires/floods/earthquakes/once a year snow, botox, gangs/drugs/gang shootings, overdoses by celebrities...oh, I forgot, the biggest reason to watch L.A. news, car`chases on the freeways by drugged and drunk gang members!
Boy Christine must have stolen your lunch or boyfriend! Jealous much? I have watched in since her days in Austin. She's the best KHOU has to offer, in my fanily's opinion.
ReplyDeleteChristine isn't good anymore, KHOU has dumbed her ability.
ReplyDeleteYou know this isn't Houston's only KABC's "takeway", KPRC's Jennifer Reyna was there in 2005.
ReplyDelete"Keep in mind, news in L.A. for the most part now is made up of celebrities, wiildfires/floods/earthquakes/once a year snow, botox, gangs/drugs/gang shootings, overdoses by celebrities"
ReplyDeleteSame thing in Houston, only with a Southern twang and the word "y'all" in it.
I think it's very clear why Lisa was hired. It wasn't because of her journalistic excellence. I've seen her on the air. First ... I didn't see the hot factor at all. And she has virtually no anchor experience. Way to go Belo.
ReplyDeleteWho cares where Reyna went or has been. Wherever it was, she obviously didn't learn, grow or improve.
ReplyDeleteI am from L.A and have watched Lisa for some time now. She does weekend mornings because KABC is too stupid to know a good thing! If she stayed in L.A. she would eventually end up at another station in a higher capacity as as L.A plays musical chairs with all of the talent there. The hardest thing is getting in to L.A.
ReplyDeleteHouston?? C'mon salaries there are not commensurate with market no. 10!! And dont give me the low cost of living bull! Have you checked the property taxes?? Even with no state income tax anyone with a salary in L.A is doing better than the "no union" schleps in Houston. Hope she Likes temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun, Humidity and bugs... Like I said before, Fire your agent Lisa (probably Lindner)!
People in LA aren't taking this news too lighly
ReplyDeleteLisa Hernandez :: Los Angeles, California
LeBron James :: Cleveland, Ohio
"She obviously didn't learn, grow or improve."
ReplyDeleteShe obviously DID!
Mr. Anonymous, you seem very negative and disgruntled toward Lisa. Get off it and over it. And most of all, GET A LIFE! Congrats Lis. This is what you've been waiting and worked for. You'll do well. L.A.'s loss, Houston's gain. This is a trade UP for both, not a fantasy.
ReplyDeleteAnon 3:26, what grew? The implants? The abnormally sized head? Just wondering if you have any examples, since on air talent and charisma only got worse.....
ReplyDeleteHer talent grew, and it's obvious when you watch her. Jealous people are blind to that fact, because of all that jealousy that's going through your head.
ReplyDeleteAnon 11:18 is blind to the truth and obviously too close to Jen to be impartial.
ReplyDeleteI for one am not jealous one bit of Jen, I simply find her completely inept, unwatchable and unqualified. I watch Anthony's weather, but when her traffic comes on, I immediately switch to Fox for good trsaffic. And when she's anchoring I laugh, shake my head and change the channel to anything else.
I am not that close to Jen at all, in fact I am being impartial, I just happen to like her.
ReplyDeleteThis was a bad hire. Just like Katherine whatley. Bad. This ND at KHOU must be scared for his job. kHOU numbers ate falling more. And he's trying to turn journalists like Ron Trevino the girl in the morning and Len cannon into bad comedians. They are ruining their careers because of bad leadership. How do you make Len cannon look bad? This guy found a way.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like even Gene Norman has been told to show some personality. It comes across as forced, very un-Gene like.
ReplyDeleteSo is the news director the problem? I used to like KHOU but the last several months things are different and just plain ugly. Stopped watching all together. The changes are bad. But if Lucy comes back I'll start watching again! Now she's the whole enchilada, beauty and brains. Come back Lucy!
ReplyDeleteThe News director is the problem. He was happy to see Lucy leave. Word is she was still under contract and they let her leave. He's made some disastrous changes. The ratings are worse than they have ever been. He is telling the anchors and reporters that it's "show biz" and journalism only goes so far. He wants them to be cheesy and act like someone they are not. I know from my friend there that anchors, reporters and producers are miserable. Expect to see even more turn over.
ReplyDeleteLisa Hernandez is replacing Lucy Noland in October, That means Lisa Hernandez will be joining Greg Hurst to be on at 5 and 10pm newscast in October. and That means Shern-Min Chow will be joining Len Cannon to be on at 4pm newscast in October.
ReplyDeleteLisa Hernandez is a refresing change. She seems to be a real person with an ability to connect with her audience. What a change from the recent rash of misfires at KHOU. I don't agree with all the vitriolic comparing her to others at the station but do agree that Christine Haas is not a very good anchor and has no rapport with Trevino.
ReplyDeleteHouston, you are very lucky to get Ms. Hernandez. She is a rising star in the industry:) "run strong run long" Ms.H Ana y Dan
ReplyDeleteAnon, I'm very happy that KHOU made a good hire on getting Lisa Hernandez, now if we can get some new blood on the weekends.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Chita Johnson from the Bay Area before she came the Houston ?
I miss Lisa :(
ReplyDeleteSince we can not have Lisa Foronda back, I believe this Lisa Hernandez, is hott, smart, chic, and if she is as tough on sports as her father, we are in for a treat.
ReplyDeleteDominque is off the market. (it not take long).
No one can say for sure about jennifer and Nefertti, (now they are both beautiful).
I want to know, why they don't dump Greg hurst and his hair. Reminds me of a trump. Infact, lets get rid of all the male anchors and go female.
Shermin has always been hot and just gets hotttterrrrrr.
Welcome Lisa Hernandez, hope to see you around town. Just look for your biggest fan:)
@10:28
ReplyDeleteJen (2.5 of 10) and Nef (2 of 10) together don't even make a 5.
Lisa Hernandez- Welcome!!! I go back and forth to LA and Houston- I'm glad to see your beautiful presence and intelligence!! ABC7 is my fav when it comes to the news back home. Even though you are a Bruin, you are ok in my book. Good Luck!!
